Edan

Galway City Arts Events Guide

Location: Roisin Dubh

Price: €16 (€14 members)

There was a small but vital hip-hop genesis in Boston at the tail-end of the 1990s led by a motley group of artists (Porn Theatre Ushers, Skitzofreniks, 7L & Esoteric, Mr. Lif, Insight) who shared a number of musical attributes — a love of block-rockin’ retro-beats and veneration for the hip-hop “new school” of the late ’80s and early ’90s, and a proclivity for irreverent, tongue-in-cheek lyrical styles, to name the most significant. Bedroom geek Edan (aka the Humble Magnificent) was the most block-rockin’ and irreverent of all Boston’s underground scientists. A triple threat on the microphone, as a producer, and behind the wheels of steel, his music — a willfully oddball and eccentric blend of rap’s past and future — caught on first among the progressive cognoscenti of London, but had such exuberance and appeal that it was only a matter of time before it staked out territory on its home turf as well. Squarehead

Location: Roisin Dubh

Price: Free

2010 was a great year for Squarehead by all accounts. What initially started as a low-key solo acoustic thing, grew into a full three-piece band, and ended up capturing the ears of Irish music fans throughout 2010.
It all started with singer and guitarist Roy Duffy playing solo acoustic sets around Dublin in 2009. After some local support slots and a two week tour with Hands Up Who Wants To Die in Eastern Europe where Roy played “wimpy pop to crusties” , he enlisted childhood friend Ian McFarlane to play bass on a debut 7” release. The lead-track ‘Fake Blood’ was the first song to draw attention to Squarehead’s music. It was featured heavily on music blogs, on Popical Island’s seminal compilation of the Dublin indie-pop scene Popical Island #1 and was released on vinyl on Any Other City Records (early home to Villagers) backed with the song ‘Mother Nature’ in August 2010. The song went on to be chosen as the number one Irish song of 2010 by readers of Irish music blog Nialler9.com. (continue reading…)

Colin Murphy is undisputably the funniest guy on the Panel *
Legendary curmudgeon and star of the Panel and BBC?s The Blame Game, this Belfast comic is a natural performer, superb mimic and proof that straight stand-up is hard to beat. His delivery is immaculate, ultra-fast and never unintelligible. More infectiously he has a knack of making each member of the audience feel like a friend.
